Human Cities Festival 2010
HC at CINEMATEK
The CINEMATEK will be illustrating the themes of the Human Cities Festival with four fictional works: Alice in the Cities – a photographer and an orphan drift through aesthetic landscapes from the United States to Germany via Amsterdam. Wim Wenders’ fourth feature film takes a new look at the city. Il deserto rosso, Antonioni’s first incursion into colour, a landmark of modern motion-pictures with the grasping beauty of its abstract urban shots. Les rendez-vous d’Anna – a young director rambles through night trains, hotel rooms, deserted stations and platforms from Essen to Brussels. An emblematic work reminiscent of the ‘70s by Belgian director Chantal Akerman, who looks at the “non-places” of the city. Finally, Still Life by Jia Zhang Ke, winner of the Golden Lion of the Venice Festival in 2006, shot in a fast-changing China against the backdrop of the construction of the Three Gorges dam.

Françoise Schein & Marie-Françoise Plissart
Françoise Schein, architect, urban planner and plastic artist, will present two of her films on the place of art in public space: “Inscrire l’Europe sur les murs des villes” (Recording Europe on the Town Walls) (2005) and “Le chemin des droits humains” (The Path of Human Rights) (2003). Marie-Françoise Plissart, Belgian photographer and film-maker, will be presenting her film “L’occupation des sols” (Occupation of the ground, 2000), that takes a look at the components, both human and geographic, that make up the urban space.
