Over the last few months the design and culture reporter Michael Dumiak traveled through the 10 far-flung communities across Europe making up the Human Cities: Small and Remote Places (that is to say: SMOTIES). The purpose was to soak in the stories and some of the experiences of these places as the team readies a publication about the projects and people engaged by SMOTIES.
As 2024 gets underway, we’re taking a breezy look back at those travels to reflect and share some of the things that make these places so vivid and unique—and think about what brings them together.
