Windows on the Future are thematic lenses through which we can look into the future to start regenerating remote places into more liveable environments. Discover more about it.
Window on the Future: Ageing Society
In SMOTIES’ “Ageing Society” Window on the Future, actions focus on fostering the “well-being of a community’s wise and knowledgeable people,” prioritizing elderly individuals. Through creative projects, SMOTIES promotes intergenerational and intercultural dialogue, grounded in the principle that “by valuing the older generation’s experiences, we enrich our collective understanding and build a foundation for a more informed future.” Chosen by CITE DU DESIGN and UMA, these projects aim to strengthen social cohesion by encouraging historical memory sharing, mutual learning, and a stronger sense of community identity.
Sainte-Croix-en-Jarez (France): Le Jeu des Cartusiens
In collaboration with the community of Saint-Croix-en-Jarez, CITE DU DESIGN created “Le Jeu des Cartusiens,” a unique card game collecting historical facts and personal memories of the village. Debuted during European Heritage Days 2023, this initiative engaged 50 local adults and 60 young people (students, children, and grandchildren of villagers).
Participants explored the village’s identity through interactive prompts, reflecting on “what was learned from the game” and “how it shapes their perception of the village’s identity.”
Participant Reflection:
“I learnt about some historical events that helped me to understand the village better.”
“We knew the place a little because our daughter got married there, but I realize that there’s a strong identity here.”
The game allowed villagers to highlight memories such as “the coldest year of the 20th century,” and the story of “farmers who destroyed the wall of the cloister to make way for their carts in 1842.” This experience strengthened generational connections, with one local commenting:
“Yes, I will play with my children and grandchildren; it’s a good way of sharing the history of our village across all generations.”

Estreito da Calheta, Madeira: Estreito é o Tempo Documentary
In Estreito da Calheta (Madeira,) UMA produced the documentary “Estreito é o Tempo,” directed by Hugo Olim and Professor Susana Gonzaga. Featuring personal stories from local elders and adults, the documentary captures the enduring spirit of the village through local narratives.
Alongside the documentary, 375 participants over 60 and under 18 attended an event that showcased rehabilitation proposals from university design students for an iconic but neglected local building. This documentary and exhibition series serves as “a heartfelt testament to Estreito da Calheta’s enduring spirit.”

A Lasting Impact on Community Well-Being
Through the “Ageing Society” Window, SMOTIES demonstrates the effectiveness of cultural projects in fostering resilient, inclusive communities. By encouraging direct engagement with shared local history, these initiatives strengthen bonds across generations, creating a collective sense of belonging and well-being.
